The Director of the Center for Holocaust Awareness and Information (CHAI) at the Jewish
Federation connects the greater Rochester community, both Jewish and non-Jewish, to the vital
lessons of the Holocaust through educational opportunities for all ages, remembrance
programming, and community engagement work. The Director develops programming and
acquires and maintains resources to honor Holocaust survivors and families, educate local public
and private school students, and engage the Jewish community. This is a part-time (20 hours per
week) position.
Holocaust Education
 Develop, manage, and execute educational/memorial programming including our annual
Yom Kippur Yizkor Service, Kristallnacht, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and
Yom HaShoah.
 Maintain and coordinate Survivors in the Classroom program, connecting survivor and 2nd –
3
rd generation speakers with local classrooms.
 In coordination with the Federation’s Teen Engagement Program Director, plan and lead
yearly Zikaron program (Holocaust Education and Identity course for 8th and 9th graders).
 Maintain relationships with current survivors and survivor families.
 Manage relationships with 2
nd, 3rd, and 4th generation family members, including
programming to help them develop story-telling skills to carry the memories forward.
 Cultivate working relationships with community groups, school districts, higher education
institutions, and other organizations as part of Holocaust education.
 Collaborate in planning Holocaust programming for the annual Jewish Book Festival, Jewish
Film Festival, and other community events.
Staffing Committees
 Staff the CHAI committee; plan regular meetings in collaboration with committee chair(s);
identify and recruit new committee members as needed.
 Staff new or reemerging committees developed in response to priorities, e.g. 3
rd
Generation Engagement
Marketing, Volunteers, Budgeting
 Work with Federation marketing staff to promote Holocaust education programs and
prepare bi-annual newsletters, as well as press releases, social media posts, etc.
 Engage and partner with a network of passionate volunteers
 Manage the Holocaust education program budget
 Attend evening programs and meetings as required
Qualifications:
 A professional with strong leadership and interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and
written communication skills
 Background in the Holocaust, antisemitism, and human rights issues. Degree in
Holocaust/Genocide Studies preferred
 Sensitive to the needs of survivors and those affected by the Holocaust and other
genocides
 Familiar with Jewish religion and customs
 A self-starter with the ability to think broadly, set direction, and successfully meet agreedupon deliverables
 Highly organized and detailed-oriented; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously;
works well under deadline pressure
